How to preview Google Ads AI Max text customisation assets before opting in

Google Ads AI Max text customisation previews show sample headlines and descriptions before opting in. They help assess generated copy, but a clean preview is not sign off for every asset that could serve.

Key Highlights
  • Google confirms sample headline and description previews before text customisation opt in or campaign launch.
  • A final landing page URL generates up to 10 example assets, usually in under 30 seconds.
  • Previews appear in Asset optimization during AI Max campaign creation and are also available when editing existing campaigns.
  • Defined text guidelines filter preview examples, but guidelines remain a campaign level experimental beta requiring text customisation to be on.
  • Previews are representative samples, not a documented approval workflow covering every asset that could serve.

Finding a bad claim in a preview is a lot cheaper than finding it in an ad that has already spent money. That makes this useful. I want to see whether Google has understood the offer, not just whether it can produce a tidy headline. A description that drops an eligibility condition or makes the service sound broader than it is could attract precisely the enquiries the business does not want.

Up to 10 examples gives me something concrete to challenge before enabling text customisation. But a clean preview only gets us so far. Google says generated customised assets are eligible to serve when generated, so these samples are not a sign off queue for everything that follows. I'd put the examples alongside the landing page and actual offer terms, looking particularly for wording that makes price, availability or eligibility sound unconditional. Persuasive copy can still be commercially wrong.

Defined text guidelines also filter the examples, which gives the preview more value than simply showing whatever Google comes up with. Those guidelines remain an experimental beta at campaign level, with text customisation required to be on. Access to previews before opting in does not establish access to guidelines on the same terms. If restrictions block every example, loosening them just to populate the panel would miss the point. Some wording is excluded because the business cannot stand behind it.

Advertisers can still remove individual generated assets or disable text customisation, although disabling it also switches off Final URL expansion. That dependency matters if the intention is to change the copy without changing where traffic lands. The preview gives me an earlier chance to spot a misunderstanding, clarify the landing page where needed or decide generated copy is not suitable for that campaign. That is a worthwhile improvement. It does not replace reviewing what actually serves.

Questions people ask

How do I preview Google Ads AI Max generated headlines before opting in?

During AI Max campaign creation, previews appear in Asset optimization. A prefilled final landing page URL automatically generates up to 10 example assets. If no URL is prefilled, enter one and select Preview examples. You can view these examples without opting in to text customisation, and previews are also available when editing existing campaigns.

Do Google Ads text customisation previews let me approve every AI asset before it serves?

Google documents representative examples, not an approval workflow for every eventual asset. Its FAQ says generated customised assets are eligible to serve when generated. Reviewing a clean set of examples should not be taken as approval of everything that could later serve.

How do I turn off text customisation in Google Ads AI Max?

Open Campaigns, then Settings, select the campaigns, open AI Max, then Asset optimization, deselect Text customization and select Save. Generated text assets stop serving, and Final URL expansion also switches off. This is a campaign setting, distinct from account level automated assets such as dynamic sitelinks.
