SOCi reports AI local search usage rose from 9% to 52%, but search still leads
SOCi reports nearly sixfold growth in AI local search usage. Consumers also verify recommendations elsewhere, complicating attribution without proving Google Ads demand has fallen.
- SOCi reports AI use to find local businesses in the past 30 days rose from 9% in 2025 to 52% in 2026.
- Reported discovery usage overlaps across channels: 83% use search, 55% social and 52% AI.
- The article says 81% take a verification step after an AI recommendation, rather than contacting the business directly.
- The survey covers more than 1,000 U.S. consumers, but the snapshot lacks full methodology and underlying data.
Personal Take, John IliopoulosA sixfold increase in AI local search usage is not a sixfold argument for cutting Google Ads. The number worth sitting beside that headline is 83% using search. These are overlapping behaviors, not competing slices of a media budget. Someone can ask AI for a recommendation and still search for the business before making contact. That could change the job paid search is doing without removing its value.
The verification loop makes me more cautious about taking branded search performance at face value. If someone discovers a business through AI and later converts through a brand ad, Google Ads may record the conversion without showing what created the interest. But that does not make the ad worthless either. It may still help secure the visit while the customer is comparing options. Cheap branded CPA cannot settle that argument on its own, and analytics tools or advanced CRM reporting will not necessarily reveal the earlier AI interaction.
There is also a more immediate account issue here than attribution. Paying for local search traffic while opening hours, service availability or location details disagree across your website and business profiles is an avoidable way to lose enquiries. I'd check those details on the locations already absorbing meaningful spend, especially where CVR has softened. That is a practical response to customers checking several sources, without pretending this survey has proved why a particular campaign is struggling.
The headline deserves attention, but this is a SOCi authored account of SOCi research, with no full methodology in the snapshot. It does not establish that paid search demand has fallen or that AI visitors produce better leads. Keep the budget conversation tied to marginal efficiency and qualified CPL where relevant. The useful next question is whether customers are arriving with different expectations, not how quickly we can move spend towards the newest discovery channel.
Questions people ask
how many consumers use AI to find local businesses?
SOCi reports that 52% of surveyed U.S. consumers used AI to find a local business in the previous 30 days in 2026, versus 9% in 2025. The article describes a survey of more than 1,000 consumers, but the available snapshot does not include full methodology.
what is the verification loop in local search?
The verification loop describes consumers discovering a local business on one channel and checking other sources before deciding. SOCi describes journeys involving AI recommendations, reviews, social media and search, rather than a fixed sequence ending in a conversion.
should I reduce Google Ads spend because more people use AI search?
Rising AI local search usage alone does not justify reducing Google Ads spend. SOCi's survey measures reported consumer behavior, not incremental conversions or paid search profitability. Budget decisions still need account evidence on demand, CPA and the commercial value of additional spend.
